Pylon Chair

Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon

Initially designed for an individual design purpose for the lightest metal chair in the world, the Pylon Chair was manufactured in a small series in Dixon’s metal workshop in the early 1990’s. The last 20 years have been part of the set of Cappellini and are now returning-again, created by the original professional metal maker who has been taught by Tom to weld. The research is triangulated for full strength in steel rod with a diameter of 3 mm-a workout with a pure unadorned structure. Through this joyfulexercise self-taught structural engineering, the initial inspirations ranging from early computer programming, electrical pylons and bridges ‘ architectural models are clear. Now powder coated with a luminous royal blue, the Pylon chair is certainly one of the most recognizable and unique, although it might not be the most comfortable in the world.
