Designer Feature: Space Copenhagen
We love design that is both classic and contemporary, and few others get this as right as Space Copenhagen do. They have designed furniture and lighting for numerous Crema Design brands, including &Tradition and Gubi. Their stunning work is leading people to ask: is Copenhagen the new Milan?
It was established in 2005 by the Danish designers Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, both graduates of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture. Space Copenhagen is a Copenhagen-based design practice that creates interior spaces, furniture and objects for luxury and lifestyle clients across the world. The multidisciplinary design partnership is well known for their way of defying habits and employing a sincere personal vision to their design.
Space Copenhagen has undertaken a wide range of projects, including everything from interior design to furniture and applied art as well as artistic installations and art direction. These diverse areas are especially reflective of their ability to transcend many roles and apply their emotional method of working to a number of projects or products.
Space Copenhagen has developed a design process that is both emotional and poetic, instilling architectural, interior and furniture design projects with modernism, a strong personal vision and an aversion to the mundane. They themselves dub this methodology as “poetic modernism” – while remaining emblematic of the Danish Modern design tradition. In addition to this, Space CPH comfortably encompasses Nordic philosophies whilst incorporating craft techniques and aesthetic detail from the design traditions of Japan and China – resulting in products that are timeless and centrally located, yet global and ageless in scope.
The duo has an impressive record of interior design projects for some of the most prestigious restaurants like NOMA – currently rated as the world’s best restaurant – and Geranium in Copenhagen, as well as designing objects for Georg Jensen and Fredericia Furniture, among others.
