The starting point of this project was a specific manufacturing method: cast iron. It is one of the oldest ways of using ferrous metals. Even though cast iron is widely known for its ornate and decorative applications, such as in Victorian-era garden furniture, the material has two distinctive characteristics: it is heavy, and it is strong. It is this use of cast iron which has inspired BRUT, a collection of tables and benches. The project makes reference to cast iron’s typical industrial uses and applies its material grammar to the realm of contemporary furniture. The name stands for raw and untreated. A solid piece of iron, heavy and uncompromising. But BRUT also calls to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine, which speaks of refinement and sophistication, which is also inherent to this project. The BRUT collection consists of a large rectangular table, a height-adjustable trestle table, two round tables, a small bistro table, as well as two kinds of benches. Designed by Konstantin Grcic.
The Chair_One was designed by German design icon Konstantin Grcic. With legs in anodised or painted aluminium and a seat in die-cast aluminium treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in polyester powder – this chair is highly customizable. Suitable for outdoor use and flame-retardant. Also available with a concrete base or a 4-star base for office use. The family also has a matching stool and table. It even has an option for public seating arrangements, perfect for galleries or large-scale commercial projects.
Also available cushions in fabric (Kvadrat “Steelcut Trio” or “Steelcut 2”) or in leather for indoor use and cushions in polyurethane for outdoor use.
It’s not just a new session, it’s a new one way of conceiving of seats and how we sit down: Spun. With its harmonious volume, Spun is dynamic and perfectly symmetrical. Reminiscent of a spool of thread, a spinning top that it rotates on itself, or a vessel that takes shape on the lathe. A fascinating contemporary sculpture when it stops, Spun becomes a welcoming and fun moving seat, on which one can discover new sensations and maybe rediscover a taste for rocking – in 360°. Spun encourages us to play with things and the world around us. Spun chairs are perfect for museums and public spaces, but also make for fun and engaging outdoor chairs for a private home or gallery. Designed by Magis for Thomas Heatherwick in 2010.
