A Buying Guide To Lighting

When choosing the correct lighting for your home, you need to consider the amount of light one needs in their room to keep it well lit. There is an illumination chart that can assist you in finding the perfect warm or cool light for each room.
To understand the illumination chart, you need to understand what a foot-candle and a lux is; a foot-candle is the amount of light that falls on a surface created by the light from one candle (Candela) that is one foot away. A lux is the amount of light that falls on a surface created by the light from one candle that is a metre away from the surface.
One lux is the same as one lumen per square metre, so you’d need to multiply the amount of lux by the square metres in your room to decipher how many lumens are required.
There’s different types of lighting such as floor lamps, table lamps, pendants and surface lights. Be careful not to make the mistake of thinking one type of lighting will be enough for an entire room, lighting works beautifully when done in layers. An easy way to create a successful lighting plan would be to think about the three uses of lighting: ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.
Lastly, the bulbs are a BIG factor! Many lights at CRÉMA are coming out with integrated LED’s that are already installed, but other lights will need to have a bulb put in, here is a Kelvin (K) bulb chart that will help you understand the different temperatures.
